Если он собран без поддержки русского, боюсь ничего и не будет.
Или может просто в SuSE файлы переводов в другом месте лежат.
Хотя странно, почему вам приходится перевод отдельно
прикручивать. Вроде бы в последних версиях русский внедрен?
Будете пересобирать? Тогда надо добавить в configure в
LINGUAS="..." ещё ru, а ru.po положить в /po исходников
