Есть ли смысл уменьшить кол-во виртуальных консолей (для повышения скорости) и
как это делается??? Мне реально-то нужны только 2: 1 и 7-я.

можно через
/etc/inittab
Я так делал когда памяти совсем мало было (32 и менее).
Но лучше отключать ненужные сервисы и убирать ненужные модули из ядра (или в
компилированные в ядро). Все это поможет немного освободить память.
