В следующий раз при таких проблемах будьте добры заглянуть в
консоли (Ctrl-Alt-F1/2/3/4/5/6/7) и при наличии подозрительностей
срисовать вывод -- и сюда его... Так хоть как-то пропавшее время
будет оправдано :-) Самой приятно :-)

Если звук на KT133* или подобных (с AC97 в исполнении VIA
VT82C686*) -- известно и исправлено, поменяйте в /etc/modules.conf
обе "snd-via686a" на "snd-via686" и сделайте
modprobe sound-slot-0 -- иначе пишите, что за чипс :-)
