Точно не помню, но в /proc должно быть что-то типа pcmcia,
в котором можно это увидеть, или /var/lib/pcmcia/stab.
В последнем (stab) можно будет что-либо увидеть при запущенном cardmgr,
а чтобы при вставке карты модуль не грузился, ничего лучше кроме почти
полной очистки файла /etc/pcmcia/config предложить не могу.
Очень хотелось бы видеть содержимое этого stab. Попробуйте сопоставить
название в нем с /etc/pcmcia/config и сделать вывод о загружаемом модуле.
man cardmgr, man pcmcia читали?
А если ядро поставить последнее 2.4.18?
К сожалению, у меня опыта с ноутбуками очень мало,
но раз больше некому подсказать...
