Заработало....все элементарно...маленький урок о том, как не надо тестировать фичи...
У меня стояла опция wrap at word, а я тестировал переключение просто нажимая на клавишу и удерживая ее.
Соответственно вим фигачил до конца терминала. Если же сделать пробел, то он переносит.
В опциях нужно было сделать
set lbr
set wrap
Вот так....
