А может быть Вы копировали что-то в /mnt/floppy, пока
дискета была не подмонтирована? Естественно, все эти файлы
там до сих пор. А при монтировании заменяются файлами
с подмонтированной дискеты.
Сделайте cd /mnt/floppy; ls; mount. Если в выводе mount
нет /mnt/floppy (или как там у Вас), то вы видите жёсткий
диск. А вот стирать эти файлы не пробовали?

А что было в настройках VMWare по поводу дискеты?
Может быть /mnt/floppy и это не сработало?
