IMAP позволяет работать с каталогами прямо на сервере, не выкачивать письма
целиком (впрочем, смотреть письма по заголовкам можно и POP3шными утилитами,
но тогда придется делать в два шага: 1) просмотреть/удалить письма по
заголовкам и 2) скачать письма), хранить почту на сервере, не засоряя
локальный диск и проч. При этом прочитанные сообщения запоминаются как
таковые и в следующий раз, вероятно, не придется их выкачивать заново.
Короче, функциональность очень близка к webmail-услугам.
Главным недостатком я бы назвал неуместность с dial-up соединением.
При работе с почтой через IMAP приходится висеть в онлайне, что, в принципе,
безразлично для пользователей с постоянным соединением, но _очень_
чувствительно для дайл-апщика.
А вообще-то это оффтопик...
