Это было верно для Linux 2.0 -- размер используемой части каждого
своп-раздела не превышал 128M. Но их могло быть много.

Некогда было rule of thumb на тему swap = 2 x RAM, но где-то в
районе RAM = 128M имеет место переход коэффициента к 1. Были еще
нюансы с VM ранних 2.4, когда для устойчивой работы было
_необходимо_ иметь хотя бы столько же свопа, сколько RAM (а при
необходимости в свопе -- вдвое и более), но это уже в прошлом.
А для нормальной оценки необходимости в памяти/свопе надо
прикинуть RSS толстого софта, при этом делать своп больше 2 x RAM
я лично смысла не вижу. Если интересно, имеет смысл заглянуть в
