с правами на устройства. /dev/framebuffer или еще какие.
если входить рутом то естессно никаких проблем тут не будет, а вот если простым смертным...
если проблема именно с логином, то в /var/log должны быть следы проверки пароля.
вообще я исхожу из того что ставились именно драйвера, а не обновлялся пам.
