Такое случается с esd если работать с ним по tcp на одной и той же машине,
и сам esd, и плейер. Там какая-то проблема с модулем mix.
Через unix socket этого эффекта нет.
У меня так и весят два:
8147 pts/12 S 2:16 esd -tcp -port 5001 -public -as 2
21557 ? S 11:27 esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -spawnpid 21553
Один для сети, второй локально, как раз ключ '-as 2' и освобождает /dev/dsp.
