А может посмотреть бы на пермишены на этом коме /dev/ttyS1 ?
Помню были у меня заморочки с ними... Хотя, наверное, Вы от рута
действуете? Можно еще harddrake запустить и посмотреть , найдет
он модем, или kudzu..
