да. только бытовой модем - это не бытовая звуковуха.
жесткий реалтайм. серьезные реалтаймовые преобразования сигнала. и все это под ос, которая вообще реалтайма не знает!

только эти драйвера настолько сложнее прошивки флеша в модеме, что это не плюс - это минус.
Минусы:

реалтайм в нереалтаймовой ОС - небольшой минус?
реализация дсп на универсальном процессоре - небольшой минус?
функционирование модема в общем окруженнии и на одном уровне со всеми приложениями - это небольшой минус?
для примера. даже эмуляция примитивного сом порта в модеме сильно снижает его надежность. попытка эмуляции модема в ОС просто рекламный трюк фирм, не знающих, куда деть эти мегагерцы, чтоб их покупали.
