А рут был через su? Может, ls -l ~/.mc наведет на мысли вроде
chown -R user.user ~user/.mc :)
PS: при теперешней su $HOME и многое другое не изменяется :(
Кстати, удобного/правильного ничего в этом не вижу -- больше
шансов упороть конфиги юзера. Про su - я давно в курсе, просто то
su, которым я раньше (BCL6.x) пользовался, без минуса таких
постэффектов вроде не давало. Сейчас проверить уже трудно :(
