Где читал - не помню - давно было :)
Ядра kernel22 -- ветка 2.2.*
kernel24 -- 2.4.*
В связи с близким появлением ветки 2.5 скоро такой путаницы будет поменьше, пока же поддерживаются и 2.2 как более стабильные ядра.
SMP - от "Симметричная Много-Процессорная" конфигурация для 2-х и более процессоров на материнской плате.
UP - без SMP - "референсные" ядра от ALT.
UP-SECURE от слова "Секьюрити" ;)
(Если чуть напутал - старшие товарищи поправят)
А FireWire - это шина к которой можно подключать разную периферию - внешние винты? цифровые видеокамеры и т.п. Конкурент USB. По умолчанию, например живет в MAC-ах.
