Странная история.
Команда ps ax раньше всегда выполнялась, и освобождала BASH.
Вдруг теперь она выполняется постоянно, сидит в фореграунде, и
никакой силой не убить ее. В Х можно закрыть терминал, а в
консоли? Чтобы узнать ее PID, нужно следующую ps ax на другой
консоли сказать. CTRL-C. -Q, -D, естественно, нажимал сто раз...
Что случилось?

Можно попробовать команду pidof (1)
$kill -9 `pidof ps`
Должно помочь.
