Просто проще разобраться с меньшим количеством пакетов и посвежее они. доставить необходимое аптом потом проще простого.
ставить лучше минимум, а потом проапгрейдить его. Новые версии просто летают по сравнению со старыми, не говоря уже о фичах.

которые аппаратно явно держат видеокарточку.
если оба поддерживают - тогда 4.1
кде 2.2 потянет?
имхо гномик буде быстрей и приятнее, но тут дело религиозное :).
если хватит blackbox, или xfce - воще летать будет
