Дело в том, что я не с CD ставил, а скачал trial из Интернета - попробовать.
Нашел ошибку - запускал инсталляшку не из консоли, потому она и не ставилась. Сегодня нарыл руководство по установке, стало легче :-)
Однако установка AVPМонитора, как выяснилось, все-таки требует умения компилировать всякую всячину, включая ядро :-(((
