Замена ядра на "посвежее" (2.4.9-alt5) ситуацию не спасла. Даже стало
казаться, что все стало намного хуже. Субъективно это выглядит так: если
вдруг ядру захотелось посвопить - джихад всем вокруг (установка трех рпмов
гноме-либс - 16 минут!). Топ (рутовый) в консоли тихо выпадает и обновляется
в лучшем случае раз в полминуты (интервал обновления был установлен в одну
секунду), load average скачет в пределах 10-14, точки - разделители минут на
часах КДЕ перестают мигать, а сами часы - обновляться. На мышь реакция
запоздалая (5 сек. - полминуты), винт в моменты особых тормозов "тих", и
только периодическое обращение к нему позволяет удостовериться в том, что
это - не глухой взвис. Убиение Мозиллы спасло ситуацию ненадолго: память
освободилось, система "ожила", но всего лишь на то время, пока хватило
доставшейся от Мозилла памяти. А потом - опять своп и глухие тормоза.
Уж не ожидал ТАКОГО от столь поздних версий ядер ветки 2.4 :-((( И, кстати,
почему это проявилось (или просто совпало так) вместе с установкой KDE 2.2
из Юниора? Я на этом ядре живу (без каких-либо проблем) c 29 августа,
работая при этом около 14-16 часов в сутки.
