Дмитрий, большое спасибо Вам за анализ. Мне неловко и я прошу
прощения, что потратил Ваше время на это, но буквально несколькими
часами ранее я прочел подобный анализ, сделанный Wietse Venema полгода
назад, из к-рого достаточно ясно, куда следует копать.

до Вашего анализа]

Увы, все более запутанно, т. к. такая же картина имеет место
при общении с altlinux.ru. Все, с Postfix вопрос снят, вопрос
в том, как отловить гадкий файрвол, к-рый, например, отвечает
"502" на "EHLO whatever" и вовсе молча разрывает tcp-соединение
в ответ на "AUTH whatever"
