Совсем недавно коллега сделал то же самое ;)
Загрузились в single mode, указав "linux 1" в lilo, и поставили
все обратно.
Дело было в том, что его apt не утянул с моего ftp некоторые
пакеты, в том числе shadow-utils. Все недостающие пакеты
скачали вручную и положили в кэш. После этого все установилось.
Вообще, в случае pam надо быть очень аккуратным, и лучше
апгрейдить его вручную "rpm -Uhv". Список зависимостей можно
предварительно просмотреть apt.
