А у вас какой дистрибутив? У меня /var/lib/named/etc конфиги лежат,
но у меня он chrooted. А у вас?

Это плохо, надо учить. Где-то я видел неплохой HOWTO на русском
языке, поищите. По моему, в дистрибутиве тоже должно быть.

насколько я помню собственные изыски по этому поводу (bind-8.2.4-alt3),
у меня не хватало файлов /var/lib/named/etc/named.conf и еще кое-каких,
после их создания все заработало. И еще, мне пришлось изменить пермишны
на /var/lib/named/tmp
