Совсем недавно "поимел" подобный опыт, но наверное, немного не такой.
Я готовил тех. документацию по проекту, пользовался lout-ом (документация по нему - прозрачна, примеры хорошие).
Правда, я не вставлял туда растровых картинок, а делал графики и диаграммы его ср-вами, использовал и подписи под разными углами...
Но лично у меня - некоторые проблемы (не решал, покуда мне некритичны, возможно они уже все исправлены) - сложные графики некачественно попадают в PDF, в PS же всё Ok.
Должен сказать, что попытка формирования аналогичного документа в OO с треском провалилась...
Но lout, как и ТеХ, - это не средство иллюстративной вёрстки, это скорее язык программирования документов.
