Насколько я понимаю, они вообще не взаимодействуют. Ну то есть по
SMTP почта приходит, далее она сквозит через правила procmail и
т.д., после чего раскладывается по почтовым ящикам пользователей.
Примерно тем же занимается fetchmail, только он сам забирает
почту с удаленных эккаунтов, после чего опять же раскладывает ее
по личным ящикам пользователей.
А они уже оттуда ее могут читать - можно непосредственно с
консоли,
а можно удаленно, тут и выходит на сцену POP3 демон - он берет
почтовые файлы юзеров и отдает их после авторизации тому кто
попросит. Отсюда ваша задача -

popa3d вообще не надо настраивать - работает "из коробки", надо
только разрешить ему запуск через xinetd и кажется еще через
tcp_wrappers (/etc/hosts.allow). С postfix посложнее, но не
сильно и документация у него очень обширная
(/usr/share/doc/postfix-что-то-там)
