Полдня пытался решить эту проблему (тоже в меню были одни скобочки -
неудобно) по уму и только что, видимо не без помощи космического разума,
удалось.
И так хинт. Как и почему не знаю (установлена и подключена куча правильных
шрифтов).

Если взять с ближайших виндов шрифт Tahoma в виде двух файлов
tahoma.ttf и tahomabd.ttf, положить их в
~/каталог_пользавательской_установки/user/fonts/ и перезапустить открытый
офис, то евоное меню будет красиво изображаться этой тахомой. Все.

Не принимая во внимание это недоразумение, первое впечатление от ОО весьма
положительное - все открывает и довольно быстро и правильно, с АА и
приличными шрифтами документы выглядят блестяще.
Похоже дождались.
