У меня до сих пор с этим проблем не было.
Ядра устанавливаются так:
rpm -i kernel*.i586.rpm
Сносятся:
rpm -e kernel-full-package-name
Что из ядер есть:
rpm -qa | fgrep kernel
Обычно сразу после установки ядра я проверяю правильность его подключения к
lilo в файле /etc/lilo.conf
Update для ядер делать чревато - здесь писали, что это может снести старые
версии ядер. (Это еще в силе?)

Не уверен. Кажется, ключи 'i' (install) & 'U' (update) взаимоисключаемы.
