Нет, как раз MTA и нужен. MTA и знает, как отправить
сообщение по указанному адресу.
Просто эта команда отдаёт дорогому MTA не по SMTP.
А вообще - MTA в Unix-системе _крайне_ желателен для
работы.
В частности, система часто шлёт вам письма.
В таких случаях, как:
Результаты выполнения команд по расписанию.
Результаты пакетных команд.
(например: echo rpm -ba <что-нибудь-ядрёное> | batch)
И многое, многое...
А так - вроде бы pine умеет слать _прямо_ на SMTP.
