А затем, что Win NT/2000 Workstation/Server имеет
ограничение на кол-во подключений по MS-овской сети, не
имея фактического ограничения... (стоит счётчик).
И лицензии (как и обновление Workstation на Server)
стОят дорого, Samba же работает не хуже, а может даже
лучше и имеет развитые возможности удалённого управления.
Второе назначение - гетерогенные сети, где живут Win,
*ix, MacOS X. В этом случае удобнее иметь дело с одним
средством - Samba.
Из подобных же соображений у меня на NT Workstation
установлен GIMP (потребности перекрывает на 500%) и
GNU/REXX.
