Если у Вас рабочая станция:
- в 2.4 нет (и вряд ли будет) supermount;
- в 2.2 нет (пока) drm из XFree86-4.1.0 (важно для 3D);
Если у Вас сервер:
- ядро 2.4 еще не прошло аудит, там еще есть security issues;
- в 2.4 не все драйвера достаточно стабильны;

Ядро 2.2.x находится в т.н. "maintainance mode", т.е. ведется в основном
исправление ошибок и backporting наиболее важных частей из 2.4.x
