С ядрами 2.4.x не работал -- не знаю, как autofs пашет.

Когда-то давно, на заре моей жизни под Линукс, сам мечтал о такой
штуке типа supermount. Но тогда её не было... Получил её впервые
с mdk RE 7.0. Но тогда она мне уже не была нужна, поскольку
в *NIX такие штуки -- от лукавого, IMHO. Да и работало это
коряво как-то. Заведите себе в .bashrc alias-ы типа
alias cdm='mount /mnt/cdrom'
alias cdu='umount /mnt/cdrom'
и всё будет быстро и под Вашим контролем :-). Или, если GUI
больше нравится -- таких оболочек тоже хватает.
