Всё -- в ядро.
make dep + make bzImage = 2 минуты 40 секунд,
make bzImage = 2 минуты.

Читайте внимательнее -- Athlon 1000Mhz (FSB 266 Mhz).
Ничего не разогнано и даже настройки BIOS (в частности, тайминги
памяти etc) не самые оптимальные -- ещё руки не дошли всё толком
настроить.
