Тогда заполнять lmhosts в виндах тоже маразм.
Это не маразм, а удобство.
Самба всю информацию по хостам соберёт сама и будет выкладывать данные вам без задержки.
При этом ничего расшаривать не нужно.
Насколько мне известно, винды тоже сохраняют информацию о машинах в сети.
