-R - как правило, не лучше, можно получить файлы, читаемые только под root
(что очень неприятно), и "левые" идентификаторы пользователей и групп на
диске. А при использовании -r выставляются права 0444 и владелец/группа
root.root.
А вот по поводу такой нечитаемости - тут уже может быть дело в опциях
cdrecord. С какими опциями писали?
