Тогда бы он номер не набирал. Более похоже, что звонок идет не на тот
номер - куда-нибудь где нет модема. Но если пробовалось на разных машинах
- это наверно не тот случай. Лучший вариант проверки - попробовать ручками
понабирать модемные номера в minicom и посмотреть что на экран выводится.
Еще ppp обычно при отконнекте сообщает номер ошибки - если конечно до ppp
там вообще дело доходит.
