Grub нормально грузит Linux при установке системы на любой
(1, 2,...) диск в любой (primary, logical) раздел в любое место
диска любого размера. Проверено на разных винтах/компах.

Попробуйте на разных матерях :) Например, на MSI 6163 Pro.
Правда, там не только grub обломался. В общем, дело не только в
загрузчике.
