Давно хочу узнать - чем xinetd отличается (и лучше?), чем простой
inetd?

Вроде xinetd -- быстрее и секьюрней, но в моем случае стоило
внимательно посмотреть на inetd.conf чтобы понять что можно
хорошо жить вообще без супердемона. Что и было сделано.
