Облегчить процесс вполне мог DiskDrake. (входит в дистр.)

Неправда ваша.
Предоставляется. Только _не_ root-у, а обычному
пользователю из группы rpm.
Соответственно он и может всё собирать.
Причины - неоднократно описывались разработчиками (и не
только)
