Я не пользовался Mutt-ом, но скорее всего он работает так же, как и mail - подклажывает письмо
под отправку, не используя SMTP.
Кстати, с чего вы взяли, что Netscape и Сильфида не могут отправить почту? Сообщение какое-то,
или что?
Или вообще SMTP на машине прикрыт? Что в правилах брандмауэра?
По тому как исчерпывающе описана проблема, можно сказать "что-то не так".
