А при установке на Com2 (или Com1) на материнке соответствующий порт через BIOS отключен? Если порты нужны, насколько я помню, можно выставить COM3, IRQ5 или 9, но в этом случае нужно в /etc/rc.d/rc.serial написать соответствующий вызов setserial, и опять же прописать в BIOS для соответствующего IRQ, что он на Legacy ISA. С PnP-ISA лучше не связываться.
После этого проверить через minicom, отвечает модем или нет. Если отвечает - надо смотреть настройки в /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.
