позвольте свои два цента вставить:
у меня тоже в mc ^O не работала под пользоватем. В то же время под root'ом
всё ОК. До конца я так и не выяснил, но одно верно точно (то что мне помогло):
в своем ~/.Xdefaults закомментируйте строки где есть упоминание о VT100:
XTerm*VT100
XTerm.VT100
какая-то из них - точно мешает!
PS Простите за такой "непрофессиональный" ответ. Некогда разбираться было.
