Похоже не взведён news-сервер.
Зарегистрируйте leafnode в /etc/[x]inetd.conf согласно
прилагаемой инструкции, проверьте стартует ли
супердемон inet, проверьте указан ли необходимый Вам
сервер новостей в конфигурашке leafnode, после чего
смело указывайте localhost в клиентах.
Работать будет так:
После того, как кто-то из пользователей подпишется на
группы при следующем (и последующих) запуске(ах)
fetchnews эти группы будут синхронизироваться.
