Работать в принципе должно без него. В /etc/ppp/pap-secrets имя, пароль
для этого провайдера (remotename обычно неважно какой, лишь бы был указан)
прописаны? Вариант - в chap-secrets, если провайдер использует CHAP.
Еще рекомендую установить пакет ppp из Appendix, а также initscripts.
