А у меня нет такого пользователя и нет каталога /etc/ntpd, есть только
/etc/ntp. Причем ситуация такая: есть два компьютера, правда в разных
местах, на одном стоит Спринг, и все работает ;), а на втором --- РХ,
и вот там-то заморочки. Конфигурационные файлы одинаковые, хозяин в
/etc/ntp и там, и там root. ntpdate под РХ работает без проблем.
