попробуйте с консоли: fechmail -vv -f /root/.fetchmailrc
И посмотрите, что он там творит.
У меня иногда просто не мог отресолвить имя сервера и спокойненько
так ложился - тихо и беззвучно. Может, и у Вас тоже что-нибудь в
этом роде...
