Подскажите где крутить, чтобы в сабже при выборе всплывающего
меню показывались русские буквы, пока кракозябры?.

Немного странно. но это может зависеть от выбора темы.
Надо править шрифты в $HOME.gtkrc
Мейнтейнер оповещен.

Попробую, может что получится.
Я толь-ко что посмотрел, указывается helvetica в качесве шрифта
но без явного указания кодировки.

Попробую обьяснить.
При установке, выбираю ТОЛЬКО XFce, русская локаль koi8-r, шрифты
так-же присутствуют. Везде присутствуют русские буковки, за
исключением меню :(
