Дело вот в чём. На внутреннем COM3 у меня обитает зверь по имени
Rockwell HCF 56K Speakerphone PCI Modem. Что я только с ним не делал,
а он всё время занят, даже номер отказывается набирать. Одни говорят,
что это Win-модем, другие, что будет от ещё работать. Не знаю кому
верить. %-)

Загляните в Modem-HOWTO. Про Rockwell'овские модемы там, по-моему,
ничего оптимистического не говорилось. В свое время у меня была такая
проблема (правда с USR Sportster). Помогло принудительное выставление
джамперов на модеме (на COM2, IRQ3) с запрещением COM2 через BIOS,
после чего Lothar согласился его опознать.
