У моего знакомого подобная проблема была при использовании
XFree4.3.3(?) если не ошибаюсь с аппаратным 3Д. Решилось откатом на
более старую версию.
У меня работал под VMWare АЛМ2.0, но даже при легком IceWM'e
наблюдалось подтормаживание, похоже, что VMWare под Линуксом лучше
управляется с ресурсами, чем под Win.
