Хм. Ничего не понимаю!
Прописал в /etc/ppp/options

require-chap
require-mppe

Получил ругань в виде:
Jan 4 15:37:28 localhost pppd[3761]: The remote system is required to authenticate itself
Jan 4 15:37:28 localhost pppd[3761]: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so.
Jan 4 15:37:28 localhost pppd[3761]: (None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address.) 

Хотя в /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
есть запись в виде:
# Secrets for authentication using CHAP #
client server secret IP addresses
"login" *  "password"
Login и password - в виде простого текста... Чего ему не хватает?
