Насколько я помню из играний со всякими MHDD for DOS, HPA это просто
способ ограничить объем винчестера. Хотя да, что-то я тоже слышал про
использование HPA как вместилища спец приложений для в том числе
восстановления/диагностики и т.д.

Наверно так и есть? =)

Точно помню, что HPA это не только для ноутов, а для всех более-менее
современных винтов.
