Здравствуйте, community.
В пакетах из сизифа или из дисков (ALTшных) я вижу подписи -
ххх-alt1.rpm, иногда алт2, алт3, алт4, так вот в чем различие?

Это различные сборки одной версии пакета. В каждой такой новой сборке
может быть как косметическое изменение spec-файла (исправление
опечатки), так и серьезная работа.
Узнать о том, что конкретно исправлено в последней сборке пакета можно
следующими способами:
1. Найти страницу пакета на вебе - там отображается текст последнего
изменения. Пример:
http://www.altlinux.ru/index.php?module=sisyphus&package=binutils
2. Просмотр изменений в уже установленном пакете:
rpm -q --lastchange имя_пакета (например, rpm)
3. Просмотр изменений в скачанном, но еще не установленном пакете:
rpm -qp --lastchange имя_файла_пакета (например,
binutils-2.14.90.0.4-alt3.src.rpm )
Полный список изменений пакета с момента его первой сборки: --lastchange
изменить на --changelog
