Подскажите где крутить, чтобы в сабже при выборе всплывающего
меню показывались русские буквы, пока кракозябры?.

у меня такая же фигня. Пока переставил язык интерфейса на анл. Копал в инете,
но ничего не нашел по этому поводу. В этой рассылке все что смогли мне
порекомендовать, это перейти на альт-линукс :)

В общем вылечилось установкой дополнительных шрифтов из дистрибутива.
Каких именно, пока не выяснил.
